The AI Advantage: IBM i Gets a Power Boost
October 2025 has brought significant news for the IBM i platform, underscoring its pivotal role in the enterprise AI landscape. A key highlight this month is the upcoming general availability of the IBM Spyre Accelerator for Power11 servers, scheduled for early December. This is an AI-specific system-on-a-chip designed to enable fast, secured inferencing for generative and agentic AI models right on your IBM Power system. For IBM i shops, this means the ability to run advanced AI models, like those powering fraud detection or sophisticated retail automation on-premise, leveraging your trusted core workloads and data without compromising on security or throughput. This integration demonstrates IBM’s commitment to embedding cutting-edge AI directly into the i platform’s infrastructure, turning your reliable business server into a powerful AI engine.
Modernisation & Next-Gen Development Tools
Beyond hardware, the path to modernisation is accelerating with AI-driven tools. The IBM TechXchange event this month highlighted advancements in software, including the new AI-first integrated development environment (Project Bob), which is designed to bring significant productivity gains to enterprise software development lifecycles. While currently in private preview, this initiative, along with the continued focus on watsonx Code Assistant for i, shows IBM is heavily invested in using generative AI to simplify and speed up tasks like refactoring and modernising RPG code. For developers and IT leaders, the message is clear: the future of IBM i development is increasingly seamless, leveraging modern tools like VS Code, advanced SQL services and a hybrid cloud-ready architecture to ensure the platform remains both productive and relevant for the next generation.
